Professional Background
Mr. Phipps represents clients throughout South Carolina on complicated and varied issues that arise within the American immigration system. He regularly appears in the Immigration Courts in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, on behalf of clients in removal proceedings (commonly called deportation hearings). Mr. Phipps also assists clients with appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals and, when necessary, with actions in the federal court system.
Many clients desire representation on applications made with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. This includes applications for permanent resident status, naturalization, asylum, and many other benefits. The immigration system is complicated and full of potential problems. As a result, Mr. Phipps is often called upon to assist clients who have encountered problems with an application they have filed.
Mr. Phipps also assists clients who need to process with U.S. consulates overseas, including the filing of waivers when required.
Before working exclusively as an immigration attorney, Mr. Phipps worked at the University of South Carolina School of Law’s Children's Law Office. Mr. Phipps taught a course titled Child Abuse and the Legal System as an adjunct professor of law at the USC School of Law. Mr. Phipps earned a Master's Degree in Intercultural Communication in 1989, and attended Law School at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Training
Mr. Phipps gives regular presentations throughout South Carolina on the Legal Rights of Immigrants, and provides training to professionals. Selected training topics include: Immigration Consequences of Crimes; Immigration Consequences of Family Law; and Working with Immigrant Crime Victims.
